Course objectives (competences):

After completing this course, students should be capable to:

  • Understand the institutional framework and structure of the European Monetary System
  • Analyze the costs and benefits of a monetary union membership
  • Understand the framework and conduct of the monetary policy of the European Central Bank (ECB)
  • Understand the structure of tax systems in EU countries
  • Analyze the problems of harmonization of tax systems in EU
  •  Understand the trend in EU public finances
Course content:

The study of this subject should enable the students to get acquainted with the issues related to the setup and functioning of the European Monetary System, as well as the harmonization of the tax systems of the EU Member States. In this regard, particular attention will be paid to the following important questions: optimum currency area criteria, institutional set-up of the European Monetary System, European Central Bank monetary policy, achievements and challenges of the common European currency, fiscal policy in monetary unions, fiscal rules, EU tax harmonization, characteristics and trends in selected EU countries tax systems, etc.
