Course objectives (competences):

After completing the course, the students should be able to:

  1. Understand the essence of the regional trade agreements.
  2. Understand different kinds of regional trade agreements and their influence over international economic relations.
  3. Understand foreign trade policy of the European Union and its relations with the WTO.
  4. Differentiate between positive and negative aspects of the development of regional trade agreements.
  5. Understand the challenges that the multilateral trading system is facing through the development of regionalism.
Course content:
  • Bilateralism vs multilateralism
  • Analysis of Article 24 as the basis for signing regional trade agreements.
  • Reasons for signing regional trade agreements.
  • Effects from the functioning of regional trade agreements.
  • Foreign trade policy of EU. Relations with third countries and relations with the WTO.
  • NAFTA and other regional trade agreements of USA.
  • Other important regional trade agreements and initiatives in the world.
  • Regionalism vs multilateralism.
